    About the platform

The Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine (SCRM) Platform is an inter-faculty and inter-institutional research cluster of the University of Bern and the University Hospital Bern, Inselspital. The lack of a profound understanding of stem cell biology and mechanisms during regenerative processes is still limiting the development and implementation of successful stem cell therapies. SCRM fosters a new and innovative multidisciplinary approach to unravel the communication network of stem cells within the tissue and throughout the body during tissue regeneration. Ultimately, our Mission is to efficiently and rapidly transfer basic research findings into clinical applications with a specific focus on cell therapy.

    Members / People
The SCRM Platform comprises over 30 member groups affiliated with the Medical, Vetsuisse and Phil.-nat. Faculty of the University of Bern and the University Hospital Bern, Inselspital.

    History

The SCRM platform was founded in November 2012 with the aim of facilitating new ideas and skills in translational stem cell research and cell-based therapies to flow seamlessly through the member groups. In 2018, the the SCRM platform launched the "Translational and Clinical Bio-Manufacturing (TCBM)" initiative that was affiliated with NTN biotechnet. The main objective of TCBM was to foster exchange and collaborations between academic groups using and operating cleanrooms including bio-manufacturing products for translational clinical trials and/or standard therapies. The goal was to bundle the existing knowledge of experts in the area of compliant bio-manufacturing in order to optimise production processes (e.g. under "Good Manufacturing Practice" (GMP), ISO and/or FACT-JACIE) within an academic setting. TCBM included the following five academic groups from all seven Swiss universities, from university hospitals and from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich:

    • Basel Network
    • SCRM Platform Bern
    • University of Fribourg
    • SICT Foundation
    • Wyss Zurich

    TCBM Steering Committee 2018-2021:

    • Dr. Marie-Noelle GIRAUD (delegate), University of Fribourg and Dr. Lavinia ALBERI AUBER (deputy) SICHH.
    • Dr. MD Marisa JACONI (delegate) University of Geneva/SICT and Dr. Jean-François BRUNET (deputy), CHUV Lausanne/SICT
    • Prof. Eliane J. MULLER (delegate) University of Bern and  Prof. Gabriela M. BAERLOCHER (deputy), Insel University Hospital
    • Dr. Paul ZAJAC (delegate), ETH-Zurich/University of Basel and Dr. Alessia BOTTOS (deputy), University Hospital Basel /Basel GMP Network

TCBM was led jointly by the members of the Steering Committee and coordinated by Prof. Eliane J. Muller (SCRM Bern) from 2018-2021.
