The Biotechnet Bioresources platform hosted BioRemid 2023 at the FHNW Campus Muttenz in June 2023. Bioremediation relies on natural processes and microorganisms to remove contaminants without causing harm to delicate ecosystems. Chaired by platform leader Philippe Corvini (FHNW), the conference attracted over 250 participants from 37 countries. Scientists and industry professionals discussed advances in identification and monitoring of biohazards, strategies to remediate sites polluted with emerging pollutants (plastic-based materials, pharmaceutical active compounds) and priority pollutants (heavy metals and organic micropollutants), as well as new strategies in integral cycle water management and biowastes management. BioRemid was prefaced by a workshop bringing together seven European projects dedicated to bioremediation: Symbiorem, Mibirem, Biosysmo, Nymphe, Electra, Eiclar and Greener. This workshop showcased the tremendous potential and progress of bioremediation in creating healthier soils, cleaning up groundwater, and improving air quality.
BioRemid 2023 was co-organized by the FHNW School of Life Sciences, the University of Porto, and the University of Granada. This was the largest conference ever on Bioremediation in Europe.
