Biotechnet welcomes incoming president Oya Tagit Verified listing

At Biotechnet's general assembly 2025, the members of the association elected a new president, Prof. Dr. Oya Tagit. Biotechnet is excited to work with Oya and sat down with her to talk about her motivation for taking on the role and vision for the association.  

Oya, tell us about your reserch background.

I earned my PhD from the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands, after completing my MSc Biotechnology and BSc Biology at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey.

After taking on various academic roles in an international landscape (Netherlands, Singapore, France, and Ireland), I am now a professor at the FHNW School of Life Sciences in Muttenz, Switzerland, where I lead the Biointerfaces research group. We work at the convergence of materials chemistry, nanotechnology, and biology—advancing therapeutic and diagnostic solutions targeting unmet biomedical needs.

Why were you interested in taking on the role of President at Biotechnet?

When I joined the FHNW in 2022, I also joined Biotechnet through my affiliation to the university. I’ve enjoyed participating in Biotechnet’s scientific events and have lectured at its summer school. These interactions showed me the value of having a national network of applied researchers focused on biotechnology and so it’s an honour to take on this new role in the organization.

As a professor and group leader with a longstanding commitment to applied and translational research in nanomedicine, I view the role as an opportunity to foster innovation at the interface of academia, industry, and healthcare. I’m excited to work with our members and stakeholders on bringing cutting-edge academic research together with industrial translation to create real-world impact.

What is your vision for Biotechnet?

With our members and advisory board, I hope to further strengthen Biotechnet’s visibility and value as a national platform for strategic collaboration. The values of excellence, inclusivity, and innovation will continue to underpin our activities, supporting the evolving needs of the Swiss biotech ecosystem.

What are the first things you plan to do as president?

I’m happy to participate in Biotechnet’s fourth annual Meet-Up at the KKL in Luzern on January 26, 2026 and look forward to meeting many of our members in person there.

Also on my agenda is connecting with the leaders of Biotechnet’s thematic platforms to learn more about their goals and activities. I’m excited to participate in scientific and networking events organized by Biotechnet platforms in 2026.

Biotechnet is participating in Swiss Biotech Day again this year, with a booth and large delegation of our members in attendance. It will be a great opportunity to connect with each other and with industry. I encourage all participants to make the most of this event by scheduling B2B meetings and look forward to seeing you there!
