Personalized Medicine

1. History and mission

Competence Center Personalized Medicine UZH/ETH - a plattform of biotechnet

DNA Sequencing has changed biomedical research. Now focus is on Medicine: Routine genetic analysis shall make patient-tailored therapies standard. The Competence Center Personalized Medicine UZH/ETH (CC-PM) coordinates and actively supports interdisciplinary research of the University of Zurich, ETH Zurich and the University Hospitals in Zurich in the field of genome-based healthcare. Cooperation between basic and clinical research will be intensified through the Competence Center. Based on the genetic disposition of a person, methods for genome-guided prevention, diagnosis and therapy will be developed and implemented. The Center will build and provide the framework for generating and integrating multidimensional genomic and (epi)genetic datasets. As such, it will operate at the interface of life science, medicine and technology.

The CC-PM’s 36 professional members and their research groups bring expertise from many different departments of ETH and different medical faculties of the University Zurich and the University Hospitals of Zurich. The focus of CC-PM is research in genome-based personalized medicine. Associated with CC-PM are technology platforms to support these research activities. They offer specific services for the members. Initially, two technology platforms have been established, namely Biobanking led by UZH/USZ and NEXUS, led by ETH, which comprises high-throughput cell-based sreening and data management and analysis.

NEXUS

One of the two CC-PM platforms, the ETH platform “NEXUS Personalized Health Technologies”, was founded in January 2015 and is dedicated to enable and accelerate the continuum of research spanning discovery through translation to innovation in personalized medicine. NEXUS has two operative units: Theragnostics Discovery (TD), located at the ETH Hönggerberg campus, and Personalized Medicine Information and Communication Technology (PM-ICT), located at the ETH Zentrum campus, close to the University Hospital Zurich. These units offer advanced genomic data management, analytical tools and services, robotic systems for high-throughput screening and genome-scale as well as chemical biology tools to define and interfere with disease-causing cell circuits.

The TD Unit is built around three interconnected pillars: integrated robotic and imaging systems (HiRes robotics, Acumen Cellista, Tecan M1000 microplate reader, Roche PCR cycler); genome-scale screening and interfering tools (chemical libraries, lentiviral shRNA libraries, ORFeome collection, CRISPR/Cas sublibraries in development) and advanced cell systems (3D microtissues).
